Wafaa Al-Nil Festival

The River Nile has been celebrated at the Wafaa Al-Nil Festival since the Pharaohs. Back then, beautiful girls were sacrificed and thrown into the river; today, people celebrate with concerts, poetic readings and competitions for children.

Muhammad’s birthday

Every year on the 12th day of the third month in the Islamic calendar, the birth of the Prophet is celebrated. On Muhammad’s birthday, people usually sing and play music in the family circle. Many hold readings and Quran recitations. It is a tradition in Cairo that a procession (caravan) with stands, musicians and carriages moves through the city.

In the Pharaonic Race, runners master a 100 km route that runs from the Hawara pyramid to the Saqqara pyramid.

Cairo International Film Festival

At the Cairo International Film Festival, which takes place annually in November, the Egyptians have the opportunity to get to know international film production beyond Hollywood. In addition, the Cairo International Film Festival often serves as a political and cultural mouthpiece. In 2011 and 2013, the festival was suspended due to political unrest and insufficient funds.
